It all started when amazon officially released A.W.S (Amazon web services) in 2006. That is when the term “Cloud Computing ” and “cloud storage” got to the sayings of the people. people started to grasp the technology that was about to change the world of computing. it got so anonymous that Amazon them self started using it, by moving the great Amazon.com to the A.W.S ecosystem.
So what is A.W.S ?
Amazon Web Services (A.W.S) is a secure cloud services platform, offering compute power, database storage, content delivery and other functionality to help businesses scale and grow. millions of customers are currently leveraging A.W.S cloud products and solutions to build sophisticated applications with increased flexibility, scalability and reliability.
What are all the services provided by A.W.S ?
There are lot of services provided by Amazon under the A.W.S platform. All services are identified as a “global infrastructure” and there are 19 main services that come under the global infrastructure. the services are as below.
- Compute
- Storage
- Database
- Developer Tools
- Networking and Content Delivery
- Migration
- Management Tools
- Media Services
- Machine Learning
- Mobile Services
- Security and Identity and compliance
- Analytics
- AR / VR
- Application Integration
- Customer Engagement
- Internet of Things (I.O.T)
- Desktop and App streaming
- Business Productivity
- Game Development
So, all the services you have seen above are the main services provided and there are sub-sections to each of the service mentioned above. so what that basically means is that there are more services based upon what service you chose from the global-infrastructure platform.
How Does Amazon deploy its services ?
To deploy whatever services they are offering. they need some physical data center’s connected to a network so that they could provide the customers with service’s. the data centers are mainly categorized into two groups.
-
Region’s
-
Availability-Zone’s
Regions are nothing but the “geographical area”. Each regions consist’s of minimum of 2 Availability-zone’s or more. and an A.Z(Availability-Zone) is nothing but a “Data-center”. There are 16 Region’s and 44 (A.Z’s) up and running by end of 2017. and Amazon is planning to start there service in 6 more Region’s and 17 more (A.Z’s).
Edge Location
Edge Location’s are the endpoints for A.W.S which are used for caching data. EXAMPLE: imagine you have your data in the American Availability Zone (i.e.Data Center) and you want to access from India, then to get that data without an edge location it will take too long to fetch the data from American data center to your location. so they have edge location’s to do the fetching for you and it will stay there for some time depending upon the frequency of that data being used at that region.
